![]() We carried out some tests on an unrepairable APC to find out how much explosive force was needed to create battle damage on this scale. It was thought that about 800lb would be needed but we found that quite small explosive forces was needed. This enabled 106 to design a modification and program in the Welding Section involving attaching additional aluminium armour plate to bellies and sponsons of all the M113s in theatre. This program was very successful resulting in an immediate reduction in the death and injury to crews, especially drivers, and the destruction of vehicles. Paul Edwards, the Welding Section Leader in 1969 was Mentioned in Dispatches in recognition of this modification. This photo, and the four that follow show the situation the Cav and we faced before the modification program. |
